FOREIGNER IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (Numero Identificación de Extranjero – NIE)
For all foreigners who have economic, professional or social ties with Spain, by article 206 of the Ley Orgánica Regulation 4/2000 provides for the provision of a personal, unique serial number for identification purposes.
This number can be requested either in person or through a duly accredited representative, at the National Police Directorate in the region where the foreigner resides, or at the consular mission of Spain.
To apply for a NIE you need:
• passport (for citizens of the European Union – identity card) with a valid visa and a stamp on entry into Spain + copies of all pages
• form EX-10
• confirmation of payment of the duty
• documents confirming the reason for obtaining the NIE
• photo of the format for identification (3×4)
Please note, that to register a real estate purchase in Spain, a foreigner needs to obtain NIE. In this case, the document confirming the reason for obtaining this tax number will be the Agreement of the Reservation of Real Estate Object. And the number itself will appear in the notarized purchase agreement and when registering the transaction in the State Register.
